History of Symbiote

Part 4:
Evolution of the Workplace

2000
Symbiote rides the wave of technological advancement as more tech labs, LAN centers and other electronics-intense workplaces embrace the ideas behind Symbiote products. Modular components, ergonomically designed accessories, cable management systems and "bomb-proof" construction make Symbiote the vendor of choice when it comes to technical work environments.

2001
The crash of the dot-com and telecom industries delivers a blow to the furniture industry causing massive slow downs and consolidation. Like he did in 1984 when he started Symbiote, Travis sees the slowdown as an opportunity and initiates an intense investigation of the markets served by the technical furniture industry. New concepts and the changing nature of the workplace are identified by a marketing team headed by Dave Armstrong, who worked with Travis back in the Herman Miller days. Dave's insights are molded into practical applications by the marketing savvy of Bob Kubasiak, Symbiote's long time manager of sales and marketing.

2002
Dave and Bob's marketing team identifies the growing niche that Symbiote services. They call it The InBetween Workplace, made up of unique, highly technical work environments in three different areas, the FastFactory, FastLab and FastOffice. Symbiote refocuses its product design and marketing efforts on this growing market.

2003
New Symbiote products are under development to service the InBetween Workplace... products that are highly flexible, and easily adapt to the inevitable change that will regularly occur in the workplaces of the 21st Century. New systems are put in place, including Symbiote Central, a hub built around the internet for helping customers design and furnish their workplaces. SolidWorks, a revolutionary new CAD system is introduced to bridge the gap between engineering drawings created strictly for product manufacture, and CAD drawings created strictly for facility design and layout, bringing product engineering and facilities design together for the first time. A massive customer-accessible database is planned to create a matrix of drawings for each of 27 different industries and the numerous kinds of workplaces within them.

With the economy showing signs of coming out of the doldrums, Symbiote is well positioned to service the growing markets for technical workplaces. And Travis... he continues to gaze through his crystal ball for signs of change; looking for opportunities to create products for the workplaces of tomorrow.
